The name “spinel” is derived from the Greek word for “spark” referring to its fiery red transparent color. For centuries Spinel had been called the “ruby Imposter”. Until the late 1700’s it was discovered that spinel was not actually ruby, it was a totally separate mineral from ruby and mistakenly set into British crown jewels. Within Great Britain’s Crown Jewels are the “Black Prince’s Ruby”, and “Timur Ruby” both of which are actually red spinel.
This long-running case of mistaken identity serves as a testament to spinel’s irrefutable beauty.
Although red is the color to which it owes its notoriety, spinel also comes in many other colors including watermelon pink, orange, grape ice , navy blue, steel gray and black.
